A youth-led environmental non-profit
The Microteam is a youth-led nonprofit dedicated to addressing the harmful effects of ocean pollution, with a special focus on microfiber pollution. Through fundraising, advocacy, and research, we strive to raise awareness about the dangers of synthetic fibres in our waters. Our mission is to promote eco-friendly clothing choices while working to protect local marine ecosystems and preserve clean, healthy waterways for future generations.
Who are we?

Motivated by the impacts of water contamination, Vancouver, BC, is surrounded by rich marine ecosystems highly vulnerable to microplastic pollution. Microfibers from synthetic clothing can enter local waterways through wastewater, impacting marine life and contaminating the food chain. With a strong connection to the ocean and sustainable living, Vancouver has a vested interest in reducing microfiber pollution to protect its environment and the local seafood industry. The Lower Mainland has already faced environmental consequences of salmon die-offs due to poor aquatic sanitation. Thus, the Microteam is ready to combat these issues.

The undercover microplastics.
Microfibers, tiny strands shed from synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, are a major type of microplastic. These fibres enter waterways through washing machines and make up a significant portion of microplastics found in the environment. Due to their size, they easily evade filtration systems, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystems and potentially entering the food chain.
